Day 13 Valletta 1 Gzira 2

Valletta vs Gzira U.

Gzira United showed that sitting in elite places of the Premier League is no punch above their weight after defying the odds to secure an impressive 2-1 over former leaders Valletta.

The Maroons have now joined the Citizens in the second place with 27 points, three adrift of pacesetters Balzan.

Gzira United busted the match wide open in the first 10 minutes with two quickfire goals which stunned Valletta.

First, it was Amadou Samb who outjumped Jean Borg and converted Sacha Borg’s perfectly weighted cross into the back of the net to draw first blood.

Moments later, Malta U-21 international Juan Corbolan showed a great piece of skill as he dribbled past two players before drilling the ball behind Henry Bonello.

Valletta were offered a lifeline when Muscat was brought down in the penalty area, with Fyodor Zammit having no doubts in pointing to the spot.

Denni sent Justin Haber the wrong way to pull back the Citizens into the game.

But Gżira managed to protect their advantage till the end.
