Valletta FC win last Cassar Cup Final
12/01/2021
The last Cassar Cup final was won by Valletta FC. The Traditional cup fighters, the Citizens eliminated Floriana in the semi-finals. The game finished 3-3 on penalties and it had to be the toss of a coin to take Valletta FC to the final.
Valletta’s opponents in the final were Sliema W. Before meeting with Valletta the blues had to go through hell before beating Hibernians 2-0 in the semi-finals.
Although still very early in the season, a good crowd attended for the final. The majority, however, went home disappointed. The two teams refused to take any chances and the play fizzled out in midfield.

Thrills were few and far between and, to make matters worse, referee Joe Cassar Naudi chose this day to have one of his rare off-days. Usually so cool and efficient, he denied Valletta two clear-cut penalty. Decisions which triggered off some very ugly incidents. Somehow the match was played on to a 0-0 draw.
The replay was much more entertaining. Sliema took an early lead and, for most of the first period, gave a fluent display of football. Gradually Sliema relaxed and Valletta inched their way once more into the game. The Blues lost their poise. The Whites smelled victory and, after scoring a merited equalizer, they pressed for the winner.
