Paul Spiteri
Paul Spiteri was born on February 28, 1951, in Valletta. He played his first football at the St Paul’s Youth Centre and later with Rovers United and Valletta Vanguards. Paul also played for Valletta Minors and Reserves.
A club pillar since legendary president Joseph Salinos, affectionately known as ‘ic-Chief’, persuaded him to join the committee in the early eighties. Spiteri has remained loyal to Valletta in the good and bad times.
In an interview with Times of Malta in 2014, Paul said that he got his injection of pride and motivation for Valletta Football Club from Joseph Salinos ‘ic-Chief’.
Paul Spiteri used to describe Joseph Salinos as not only the president of Valletta Football Club but he was the father of the team. He was a bachelor, and he treated the players like his sons.
When Paul was approached by Salinos, to stand for the committee, he told him several times that they should never abandon the club.
Like any high-ranking official of an organisation or a company, Spiteri had to contend with criticism when the going got tough, especially when Valletta were afflicted by serious financial problems after the glorious years under the helm of former president Joe Caruana Curran. Still, he has also lived through many special moments in the club’s history.
Paul entered the administration of Valletta FC in 1981, which makes him one of the longest, if not the longest-serving, Valletta committee members in the club’s history.
During this period, he served the club as assistant secretary and vice president. He has also served as MFA Council Member from 1987-2021 and for 12 years as an Executive Member of the association.
During his 41-year spell with Valletta Football Club, Paul worked closely with presidents Joseph Salinos ‘ic-Chief’, Dr Emanuel Bonnici, Joe Caruana Curran, Charles Camilleri, Victor Sciriha and Alexander Fenech.
Spiteri’s total of 55 major honours makes him the most successful club administrator in the history of Maltese football.
In 2014, Paul Spiteri and football historian Carmel Baldacchino launched the first book about the history of Football in Valletta titled CITy!
Paul Spiteri decided to retire from the football scene in 2022-2023.
