Day 29 Valletta 1 Gzira 1

Valletta vs Gzira U

alletta lost precious ground in this year’s title race when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Gzira United.

The Citizens seemed to have taken control of proceedings when they took the lead on 29 minutes.

Michael Mifsud’s cross was deflected by Luke Montebello into the path of Maximiliano Velasco. The Argentine miscued his volley with the ball falling kindly to Montebello who thumped the ball home.

But Gzira fought back and drew level six minutes from half-time.

Jacob Borg’s cross found Gianmarco Conti inside the area and the Brazilian turned past Romeo Romao to hammer the ball into the roof of the net.

Valletta tried to step up their game in the second half but looked short of ideas.

Their best chance came in stoppage time when Romao’s dipping shot hit the bar.

In the end, the stalemate prevailed leaving Valletta a point adrift of leaders Hibernians.

On the other hand, the point gained ensured top-flight football for Gzira for next season.

Valletta’s Michael Mifsud was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
