Former Valletta FC coach Edward Aquilina passes away at the age of 75 years.

Edward Aquilina, a product of Sliema Wanderers, has won several honours as a player, these include the Premier League championship seven times, six times with the Wanderers and once with Hibernians. He also won the FA Trophy five times.

Edward Aquilina, who was an advanced midfielder, won all the competitions that were held during his career (1961/62 – 1978/79). He played a total of 165 games for the Wanderers and 22 games for Hibernians in the First Division league.

Edward Aquilina was one of four Maltese players who played for Pittsburgh Phantoms in the American Professional Championship in season (1986/87). He played a total of seven matches with the Maltese National Team and scored an important goal during the Maltese victory over Libya (1-0).

Edward Aquilina started his coaching career with Sliema Wanderers (1986/1987). He also coached Qormi, Senglea and Marsa. Aqulina joined Valletta F.C. in season 1993/94 as coach of the Minor Team. Aquilina took over the Valletta FC senior squad in season 1994-95, his first game was against Hamrun Spartans on 4th March 1995 (6-1).

Aquilina won several honors with Valletta FC including the Premier League twice 1996-97, 1997-98, three times the FA Trophy 1994-95, 1995-96, 1996-97, three times the Lowenbrau Cup 1995-96, 1996-97, 1997-98, three times the Super Cup, 1994-95, 1996-97, 1997-98 and the Super Five Cup in 1996-97. Edward also won the five cups and made the Double in the 1996-97 season.

Edward Aquilina also led Valletta FC during eight matches in UEFA competitions.

The last game under the guidance of Edward Aquilina was the Super Cup final against Hibernians on May 24, 1998, Valletta won the final (2-1).

In 2002 Aqulina returned with Sliema Wanderers where he stayed up to 2006 winning lots of honours with the Wanderers. He coached in a total of 243 games in the Premier Division. Aqulina retired from coaching during season 2006-2007.
