Day 4 Valletta 1 Hibs 2

Hibernians maintained their perfect start to this season’s BOV Premier League when they scored two first half goals to see off champions Valletta 2-1 at the National Stadium.

Hibernians made their intentions clear immediately and took just six minutes to break the stalemate.

Jorginho received the ball on the edge of the Valletta area and despite being closely marked by Luke Dimech the Brazilian striker turned quickly and hit a firm drive that gave no chance to Valletta goalkeeper Nicky Vella.

On the half hour, goalkeeper Nicky Vella almost regaled Hibernians a second goal when he misjudged Clayton Failla’s cross with the ball falling into the path of Luis Edison who however, took too much time to conclude and was closed down by the Valletta defenders.

But the Hibernians’ Brazilian striker did not miss a second time as six minutes later he doubled his team’s lead.

Cohen picked Edison with a fine throughball and the nippy forward hit a low drive past Vella.

One expected Valletta to stage a reaction after the interval but they struggled to put any pressure on the Hibs defence.

Valletta were unlucky three minutes from time when Elford Aliyu was put through by substitute Llewlyn Cremona but the English forward saw his low strike hit the post with Bonello beaten.

However, a Bonello howler gave Valletta a lifeline as the Hibs goalkeeper charged out of his goal to anticipate Kooh-Sohna who moved past the Hibs goalkeeper before depositing the ball into an empty net from a close angle.

But that came a little to late as Hibs held on for a merited win.

Hibs striker Jorginho was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
