Charles Camilleri
‘Karmenu’ as Charles was popularly known, served on Valletta’s committee between 2000 and 2008.
A respected businessman who was honored with the Ġieħ il-Belt Valletta award in 2014 was elected President of the City club in 2003 following the departure of Joe Caruana Curran.
It was time when Valletta were haunted by serious financial difficulties which forced them to part with most of their established players. It was a very delicate period for the club and it was very hard to find people of a certain stature willing to take over the Presidency.
Charles however, did not shy from the challenge. His objective at the time was to build a new team and try to be as competitive as possible in the Premier League but he knew there was little chance of challenging for trophies.
Camilleri had the onerous task of bringing stability back to Valletta. This he succeeded to do while keeping the team competitive.
Camilleri left his post in the summer of 2007 making way for Victor Sciriha but he kept his place in the Citizens’ committee as Treasurer.
Camilleri passed away on August 8, 2015 aged 60. He left a great void in the City camp and fond memories of a great sportsman and gentleman.
